A POSTCARD FROM GARFIELD

A friend mentioned Mimosa trees the other day, and I asked if he was familiar with the shame briar. If you aren't familiar with them this is an illustration of one. They are native plants but are generally so small some folks never pay them any mind. The reason for the name is their propensity to have their leaves fold shut if touched. They are very small ground vines, hardly ever climbing as many vines do. What has always fascinated me is how closely they resemble their cousin the Mimosa tree (Asian silk tree), their leaves and flowers are almost identical, but it is a small vine and the Mimosa is a small tree. These plants evolved on separate continents from a common ancestor, and amazingly, they are so similar, yet so dissimilar. Why? How? Because the same God made them all. Somewhat like lobsters and crawfish, "the same but different!"

I will leave off here, and thank you for the visit.
