GEORGIA FOLK AND FARM LIFE - September 11th is a date that will always stop us in our tracks. Most of us remember exactly where we were that morning in 2001, how the world seemed to change in an instant, and how neighbors leaned on one another in the days that followed.

What stands out most, though, isn’t just the tragedy, but the courage. Firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and ordinary citizens ran toward danger when every instinct said to run away. Soldiers stood ready, families sacrificed, and a new generation was called to serve. Out of the smoke and sorrow rose a spirit of unity and determination we’d do well to remember today.

Here in Georgia, we’ve always admired the quiet heroism of those who put on the uniform — whether it’s the crisp blues and greens of our military, or the turnout gear and badges of our first responders. They don’t often ask for thanks, but their daily work — responding to a wreck on a back road, keeping watch through the night, or standing guard in faraway places — is the reason we can gather safely in our homes, churches, and communities.

On this anniversary, we want to say plainly: thank you. To the firefighters, law officers, medics, and service members, past and present — we see you, we honor you, and we’re grateful for you.

And as we remember those who never came home, may we keep their families in our prayers. May their sacrifice remind us of the preciousness of life and the importance of looking out for one another.

Let us never forget, and let us live in such a way that honors the example set on that September morning — courage, compassion, and service before self.

We’d love to hear from you. If you have a photo or a story of a first responder or service member in your family, please share it with us in the comments. Today, let’s fill this space with gratitude and remembrance.
