A REMEMBERAMBLE FOR WEDNESDAY

ree

GEORGIA FOLK AND FARM LIFE - I am just now tipping my hat to this nice, cooler morning, and bid you a pleasant one as well. I can well recall how the first cooler mornings of a year were greeted with such "warm admiration,"...I hope you grasp the fun I had using that turn of phrase...especially in the days before air conditioning.

Some can recall while others that can't need to hear of it, so I will recount some of the things those days of relentless heat, both day and night brought to bear, and may understand why those cooler days were as well received as elves handing out candy to babies. In those days on a farm and in a farm house, the relentless heat and high humidity enveloped you like wearing ya lil brother's longdrawers.

Your hair was hot, your feet scorched and each and everything God put on ya between them two was hot also! Kids that were free for a day wore little, boys like us were bare of foot, had crew cuts and no hats, shorts and no shirt unless indoors where a shirt was required. Girls, now mind you, boys at that age and stage paid little girls little heed.

I seem to recall that it was the same for them other than the crew cuts and no shirts. One thing I recall was how our t-shirt sleeves were rippled along the top with dirt-stains that would not ever wash out, from wiping our sweaty faces on them. Mama would scold me to stop wiping my dirty, sweaty face on my shirt sleeve, but never gave me an alternative to it.

Grown-ups were like that then, quite disagreeable, and I blame that on the heat too. Shade was hot, but not as deathly hot as being in the direct sun. Dogs knew this, and made "theyselves scace," (made themselves scarce) usually in the bare earth under the house, behind the doorsteps that acted as a fortress for the hounds.

Any foreign dogs, reptiles, or fellow furry critters, as well as Nazarenes or Watkins Products folks all understood that a visit or full frontal assault on a swept-yard farmplace was by decree and custom, done by approaching the front doorsteps, be they concrete blocks, or catty-wampus wooden ones with a brickbat supporting one corner.

Think about the brilliance of a bare, swept dirt, yard. If arry'a creature that moved on land had visited or approached the house in a circuitous manner or peeked in a "winder," their footsteps or tracks would betray them. So, it was safest and most advisable to come straight to the front porch, stop a safe distance away and "halllooooo" them before setting foot on the steps.

If you heard a growl, you stopped right there, just as if Matt Dillon had told you to. One thing many folks don't know is how mean a sweet redbone, bluetick, cur dog, or Treeing Walker, can be. They catch things meaner and bigger than you, all the time. Sometimes they eat'em. Now, it seems that I have taken up so much time on the hot dog situation of yore, that I will have to finish this on how folks dealt with the heat, tomorrow.

Y'all remind me now. We love you and thank you for coming so faithfully.

Good morning Wade!

Happy Hump Day!

I remember those days without air conditioning, we had an attic fan that created a movement of air that helped to make the night's bearable!

You boyz 3 have a great day!

Make sure you do at least one thing that makes you happy!
