GEORGIA FOLK AND FARM LIFE - Sunday afternoon we spent nearly two hours with Chris and Taylor Malpass. And when I say “spent two hours,” I mean we sat in the Townsend Center, but it sure felt like we were in their living room. That’s the thing about the Malpass Brothers — they pull you right in like kinfolk and play country music the way the Lord intended it to be played.

Chris came on Georgia Radio a while back, and he was just as kind and easy to talk to as you’d hope. He and Taylor are carrying the torch for real country music, and I’ll tell you plain: it’s in mighty good hands. And here’s some good news — they’ve got a brand-new album coming out this February. Go ahead and download their whole library now, so you’ll be ready when the new songs drop this coming year.

Now Taylor… Lord have mercy. Somewhere between saving Cracker Barrel and keeping us laughing so hard our sides hurt, he nearly lost it on stage. He cracked a joke about an “old woman” in her 70s, and the crowd wasn’t having it. Folks started hollerin’ back at him like he’d poked a hornet’s nest. Taylor, nearly broke right there in front of us, and we were all in stitches. That’s the joy of the Malpass Brothers — good fun, good music, and just enough mischief to make you feel alive.

They play the kind of country music Bill Anderson and Connie Smith still keep alive today. It isn’t bluegrass, but it has that same closeness you feel at a bluegrass gathering — where the folks on stage and the folks in the seats aren’t so far apart. The songs bring everybody together, and for a little while, it feels less like a show and more like a family reunion with guitars.

And speaking of Bill Anderson — the Brothers dress sharp, because as Whisperin’ Bill says, nobody’s paying to see their neighbor up there in a ball cap and sneakers. These fellas look the part, and more importantly, they honor the past with a real reverence.

Here’s the other thing. They didn’t run off when the show was done. They walked right out and shook hands, hugged necks, and visited with anyone who wanted a word before heading home. That’s country music. That’s real.

It’s not easy being on the road. To make a living, you’ve gotta be away from the ones you love the most. But the Malpass Brothers give us a piece of their heart every night, and for a couple of hours, they make us feel like part of their inner circle. That’s a gift.

So here’s my thanks to their circle of friends and family who cheer them on, and to Chris and Taylor for carrying the banner high. If you’ve never seen them, do yourself a favor. Catch their TV show, go to a taping this November, or mark your calendar for their festival in May. And remember — that new album hits in February. Download the music they’ve already given us, so you’ll be ready when the fresh songs roll out. Check their website for dates.

And for goodness’ sake, drink that GoGut.
