THANK YOU LORD, FOR THE GIFT OF RAINS
THANK YOU LORD, FOR THE GIFT OF RAINS

We have been blessed with repeated rains of late, and there is joy in it! Yes, joy in the rains. The forecast is for much more rain soon, we will be thankful for it. I am listening to our military jets overhead, we are usually in their flight path, and I love to hear them as they bank, turn, and maneuver in the skies. You know they are pulling some "G's," you can almost feel it along with them! While ago though, one jet did my favorite "thing," they do, and that was not doing aerial maneuvers, but flying straight line, very fast, and just above the tree tops as it seems. Since I am still a little boy, I love it, and it is a thrill. The approaching scream of those jets gives a you a momentary "heads up," the mighty roar comes quickly, and leaves in a like manner. Never lingering for photographs, just that doppler principle saying goodbye to our ears, like nothing else can.

Hang on to ya hat!
Hang on to ya hat!

Speaking of flying, I was reminded of something that is indicative of how society is always in flux, things that were once acceptable are now not acceptable and things that were not acceptable, now are. What I had on my mind, was that when I was a boy, downtown Swainsboro had a resident flock of pigeons. They called the rooftops of the courthouse and store buildings in the square's roofs, home. Now and then when their numbers had increased, the city police officers would shoot them with .22 rifle using shot shells, or as we called them, "rat shot." They would be perched on the cornices at the roofs...the pigeons, not the "po-po"...and they "dispatched" them with ease, and the shot was so light that it caused no damage to the masonry. They always let an old man know when they were having a pigeon shoot, and he followed along with a gunny sack to pick them up, to eat...no, not right there on the sidewalk, I meant he took them home, huhuhuh. I can't imagine the hullabaloo that would cause today. But that does not matter though because there are not and have not been pigeons in downtown Swainsboro for ages. I wonder what happened to them? Again, huhuhuh. Actually if you think about it, there used to be flocks of pigeons in many locations, like feed mills, barns, grain elevators or most any place with tall structures to perch upon far above the ground, with nearby food sources. I will close with a humorous story that always was funny to me. Several years ago a young married couple we knew, with a four year old daughter, found they were going to have a baby boy joining their little family. They decided to let their young daughter help them come up with a name for her upcoming little brother, to make her feel more of a part of the process. They told her to be thinking about a name for her soon-to-be brother. She thought about it, and based on what she knew about young boys, she came up with what she was sure would be the perfect name for a lil bother, and that was, "Chevy Doodie Ball." Oh yes, I know, that is hilarious, it is still funny to me all of these years later. No, no, they did not name the boy that. I love having y'all drop in for this neighborly chat. Keep ya powder dry...

Do you get to hear the sonic booms? When we lived over in Bama, Maxwell Air Force Base was in Montgomery and the jets were frequently flying overhead and sonic booms were a regular occurrence. I guess I haven't heard one in years. As for the name for the little boy, I think that would've made a great name. If I ever have a son I will name him that. Hey, it's better than naming him Sue. Which reminds me, I happen to share the same birthday with Johnny Cash. Oh well, gotta go, I see that train a',coming.

Pigeons are still around here. On one of he busiest streets in Chamblee they congregate in high numbers on the lines and rooftop of a nearby building.. Turkeys are the only bird we eat in this house. Enjoy your coffee and have a great day . Barbara Browning

Kinda hard to keep my powder dry in this weather; but, I am not complaining, we need the rain.
